Displaying the Timeline View in Portfolio Planner

In the Portfolio Planner, users can display projects graphically in a Gantt chart. This display is also known as Timeline View. Once enabled, the Timeline View option provides a chronological overview of projects within a portfolio, including start and end dates. Use the pool capacity and project demand information found in the Timeline View to aid in staffing and resource allocation. Projects are displayed in the same priority order in Timeline View as in the Table View.

Note:  A waterline is also visible in the Timeline View. The waterline can be updated by changing the Target and Constraint metrics.

To display the Timeline View for your planner:

  1. From the Planning menu, go to Portfolio Planner.

  2. Open the desired planner.

  3. Select Timeline View toggle on the top right-hand corner of the screen.

Notes:

  • You can view additional information about a project, such as start and end dates and project duration, by hovering over individual projects in Timeline View.

  • If a project encounters a problem, it will be highlighted in red in the Timeline View and marked with a red circle icon in the project name column. Additionally, the affected months will be displayed in red. For resource issues that are limited and do not impact the entire project, a half red/half pink circle icon will be used to indicate the problem.

  • By default, the Timeline View extends from the earliest start date of a project on your list to the latest finish date.

  • In the Timeline View, you can select the desired date range you wish to view, such as earlier or later dates. Additionally, you may edit project start and end dates by clicking a project and then dragging it to the desired dates.

  • If a project is marked "Included in calculations," it will appear in the Timeline View.
